| N81's Big Secret |
| Sunday, April 27, 2008 |
Since I've seen this more than once, that many people get the N81 and never found out about it's NaviWheel, I decided to put an ad for it in this post: N81 HAS GOT A LIKE IPOD SCROLL, CALLED NAVIWHEEL. HOW TO ACTIVATE? GO TO SETTINGS, GENERAL AND TURN NAVIWHEEL ON. WORKS IN GALLERY, MUSIC PLAYER AND SOME OTHER MENUS. It might get even worse when some people didn't know there actually exists dedicated gaming keys on the top of the phone.. Kill me! Why the hell did you buy this phone then?!! | See New, Hear New, Feel New |
| Saturday, February 23, 2008 |
I've had the N81 for 2 weeks now and I've been asking myself, why N81? What makes somebody buy an N81? Or what makes me I, give up my money on some phone that has a 2mpx camera, no GPS and no acceleration sensor? Maybe because it just follows Nokia's rules? The See New, Hear New, Feel New thing? | N81: A couple of Notes |
|
Last week I noticed my N81's firm was not updated so I backed up phone memory, plugged in the USB cable, and started the update. 20 minutes later, the update was complete, unplugged the phone, waited till it booted so as to head directly to memory application to restore back up. The phone booted and to my surprise, everything was the same. Same concert theme, same standby apps, same settings, same everything. There was a moment that I thought the update was unsuccessful and the phone somehow restored itself, then I remembered that a couple of months ago Nokia induced a new technique in software updates that does not destroy phone memory data and settings after the update. Kudos Nokia! The other thing I want to note, is the Switch application. Switching phones will make you usually lose messages everytime you Switch phones. That's why Switch came to replace data transfer and facilitate the Switch process. And nice name picking; Switch. Btw can you say switch 15 times without mistaking? :P Labels: N81, n81 8gb, N81 8GB review, thoughts

| N81 8GB: Music Power |
|
My phone is my Music player. What I care probably the most about a phone is its music playing capabilities; sound quality/volume, number of songs it can carry and simplicity in control. I literally listen to music on my phone everyday, every time when there is nothing to do or when there is. Before the N81, I used to move around with about 300 tracks on my N80's 1GB miniSD. The phone just wouldn't stop screaming memory low delete some data. It also gets more frustrating when I want to add a song, then I have to delete one in exchange so there will be enough space for it. 8GB is like heaven! Whatever music I want to listen to I could just download them to the mass memory without fear of being faced by the stupid memory low message! Thumbs UP! Headset: I don't know if it's the phone or the supplied headsets, but the sound quality produced when playing music is absolutely impressive! I just can't get enough of it! Visualisation: Visualisation looks.. damn cheap! I agree I don't usually launch visualization when I listen to music, but when I tried to, I was.. disgusted, honestly! Thumbs DOWN! Audio: Audio settings and equalizer... my favorite places in music player. Applying loudness and stereo widening to music just adds more shine to sound quality.. Music Keys and NaviWheel: I love dedicated music keys. Really they make life easier. You don't have to jump to the music player everytime you want to change a track. However, the way they're positioned in the N81 exposes them to accidental hits very often when using the D-Pad. Also the time lag between pressing the key and it's action annoys me a lot. I love scrolling with the NaviWheel! It's fast and its more like entertaining than just holding down a key to scroll. My only take about it is that NaviWheel's functioning is subject to softness of hand. I noticed when my finger is very soft, I couldn't get it to scroll smoothly. When my finger is little damper it functions ok. I think this could be fixed by adding some sensitivity option in NaviWheel settings. To sum up, N81 8GB is an excellent Music player in all aspects. Nevertheless, some little work has to be done here and there to become perfect. Next: Gaming Capabilities >>> Labels: N81, n81 8gb, N81 8GB review

| N81: Buttons Buttons Buttons... |
| Tuesday, February 12, 2008 |
I've had the N81 for 2 days now, and the first thing that took my attention is the number of buttons. There is a total number of 17 buttons on N81's interface without counting numbers pad, camera, volume and power buttons. 17 is a huge number if distributed on such a small space, but this is where Nokia got smart by letting only buttons to be used light up in their appropriate time. For example, music keys light up when you're listening to music, game Keys only light up when you're playing a game. You'll never feel the place is overcrowded. Thumbs up! NaviWheel: It's not as smooth as the ipod's. Sometimes I just can't get it to scroll properly, but I love it! It works in Music player, it works in Gallery, and in Multimedia menu. And it's damn fast! Thumbs up! Game Keys: Before seeing them in real, I couldn't really get that there are actually 2 buttons on the top phone just for games.. And you know what, I download and play games only because I love these 2 buttons. :) Thumbs up! Pencil Key and the Silent shortcut: I wanted to copy some stuff from phone memory to the mass memory, so I had to mark many Items.. It took some time to figure out that the "#" button is the one to do so, after they had removed the Pencil Key. Yeah 17 buttons and no pencil key :S It was handy IMO. Anyway, why Nokia did you disable the shortcut to silent mode?!!!! Why do I have to press the power button, scroll to silent mode when I could have just hold down the "#" button?! Thumbs down Thumbs down! It's quite a loss for me :(.. Music Keys: Being placed just around the scroll keys makes me accidentally hit them at many times (Thumbs down), however they're pretty useful when you're navigating through other stuff on the phone (other than the music player). Another thing to improve is the time lag between pressing the key, and it's action to occur. It takes about one second for a song to pause after actually pressing the pause button.. Thumbs down! Since the "to be released" N96 has almost the same interface as N81's, I hope they've put into consideration those downs that I've mentioned. | Buried Alive: N73, N80, N93 |
| Saturday, January 5, 2008 |
Once upon a time, the N73, the N80 and the N93 were kings of smartphones. N73 was the king of imaging, N80 was the Internet and Connectivity king, and N93 was the multimedia and gaming king.. Their powers even increased when they evolved into N73 ME, N80ie, and N93i. There were no other phones that could bare their strength, power, and attractiveness... until came.. N95.. the predator. The N95 came to take over what they had achieved. It came to reveal the weaknesses of the old kings. The poor kings kept struggling to maintain their position. But with no mercy, N95 buried them alive. They kept fighting and screaming to let everybody know they're still alive, but in no time, their voices started to fade away.. until total silence... We haven't heard any news about N73, N80, nor N93 for quite a long time. Nokia is totally ignoring them. I understand they're mostly concerned right now with the new monsters; N95, N95 8GB, N82, N81 and N81 8GB, but come on, those phones you're ignoring were the kings not too long ago. Give them new firmware with more enhancements or at least update our Dowloads! application folder. Survival is really for the strongest... Labels: N73, N80, N81, n81 8gb, N82, n93, N93i, N95, N95 8gb

| Nokia N81, Nokia N82, Rumors? I guess not. |
| Saturday, May 12, 2007 |
A couple of photo has spread on the internet previewing an N81 and an N82 along with their specs. The photos looked fake to me at the begining, however Nokia sent requests to Some website owners (Symbian-Guru in specific) to remove the photos which indicates they are real or else why would they care. In my case Nokia hasn't sent me anything, therefore I'll publish the photos :)
N81:
Set to be launched 4Q 2007 and running S60v3 FP1, the Nokia N81 is a slider-followup to the N91 8GB Music Edition. It is quad-band EDGE with 2100 HSDPA, WiFi (b/g w/ uPnP), BT 2.0 with A2DP, and a 3.5mm slot.
Specs: - Form factor: slide
- Dimensions: 102 x 50 x 17.9 mm
- Weight: ~ 140g
- Memory: 8GB internal flash memory
- Music Playback time: up to 12,5 hours
- Gaming time: up to 3-4 hours
- Talk time: up to 3-4 hours (3G)/3-4 hours(GSM)
- Standby time: up to 15 days
- Main Display: 2.4"QVGA 240x320, 16M colors
- Main Camera: 2Mpix
- Second Camera: CIF
-------------------------------------------------------------- N82:
This is a candybar device to followup the N73. Similar to the N81, it has quad-band GSM and 2100 HSDPA, BT 2.0 (w/ A2DP), WiFi (b/g w/ uPnP), but also adds built-in GPS, TV-out, FM Radio, and a MicroSD slot. The kicker is VGA, 30 fps video recording and a 5MP shooter with Carl Zeiss lens and auto-focus, similar to the N95. However, the N82 packs an awesome XENON flash for ultra-brightness.
The N82 is designed for style, but packing the features to make it worth the $$. Still running S60v3 FP1, the N82 lengthens the life-span of the S60v3 FP1 platform, and should be available in Q4 2007. It is targeted towards "tech-stylists 20-35," with a female skew, but not enough to dissuade males of its power.
Specs: - Dimensions: 112 x 50.2 x 17.3 mm
- Weight: 120 g [Target]
- Memory: Up to 100 MB in-build, support for hot swappable MicroSD card (1GB in-box)
- Talk time: GSM: 280min, WCDMA: 180min (Target)
- Standby time: GSM: 270hrs WCDMA: 250hrs (Target)
Display Specification: - Main Display: 2.4"QVGA 240x320, 16M colors
Camera Specifications: - 5MPix, Autofocus, up to 20 x digital zoom. Real Xenon flash. Integrated camera protection
- Secondary camera: CIF
The N82 is DEFINITELY something to write home about. Basically all the features of the N95, plus a better flash, and *hopefully* better battery/memory management in roughly the same size as the N73
