Time and Date issue on N-Series
Tuesday, May 15, 2007
Why there is always a pain in the neck issue with some Nokia Phones?!! I bought my N80 3 or 4 months ago and it was working just fine, untill someday when it ran out of charge, I plugged the charger, switched on the phone, waited for the welcome screen untill I found it asking for date and time. I thought " well maybe that happens when battery is empty in N80". Then I switched off the phone, switched it on again to realize that after every switch off (no matter the battery is empty or even fully charged) the phone just loses the date and time :S
As you might think that is a software issue, but really it's not. After I had had that issue I updated to the latest STUPID firm 4.0707.0.7 and the problem just remained there.

I searched the web for a solution, I found alot of people facing the same problem-with different phones (all N-Series). The only explaination I found out there is that there is a small battery inside the phone ( not the main battery ) that keeps the time and date saved if the phone is switched off or even the battery removed. Here comes a question: Why doesn't the phone lose other info as country/region or custom profile names... etc. I think this is basically because, the time and date are stored on special type of memory, operated by that small battery, that allows them to be updated continously every minute when the phone is switched off. Other info do not change when the phone is switched off so they are on another kind of memory. I saw some photos of a 3250 in pieces on Symbian-Freak and I saw that battery exists.

As you can see there is a battery at the middle left of the phone board.

I went to a service point called Raya in my country, I spoke with someone there, at the beginning he said that this is a firmware bug. I said I updated the firmware and the problem remained. He told me then this happens in all N80s. I wondered how come this guy works at a Nokia service Center :S . I began explaining the battery thing and I wish I didn't, the guy just denied the existance of that battery and insisted that this happens on any N80 even when I told him this didn't happen to me in the beggining.
Another question to be be asked here, why didn't this happen in phones rather than the Nseries?
Also does this happen now because the small battery runs out of charge?
Or it moves from its place? ( due to phone fall or something )
Is Nokia aware of this issue? I really hope so..

I have a Nokia 6108 which suddenly developed the problem.
Actually I think it doesn't forget time/date so long as you only disconnect the battery for a very short time - which indicates that the backup battery inside is having trouble sustaining the clock.

I have a hunch it might have been triggered by removing the battery too fast before the phone had finished shutting off - perhaps that puts a load on the backup battery and damages it.
